Grains/Malts/Adjuncts

HopTech stocks what we feel is the best selection of malts and grains. They are available by the pound (1 lb minimum and 1 lb increments please) and some in 50/55 lb sacks. While we recommend you buy all your malts uncrushed and crush them fresh yourself, we will be glad to crush them for you at no extra charge (make sure you tell us when you order). The exception is the 50/55 lb sacks which are only available uncrushed. 50/55 lb sacks will now show the shipping charge to your destination (if you live in the 48 continental states).

Our Featured Grain Suppliers

Great Western: Great Western has one of the best pale 2-Row malts around and we sell more of this malt than any other. It is the same malt used by Anchor, Sierra Nevada, Mendocino and virtually every other West Coast microbrewery. They also supply our White Winter Wheat malts and check out their new Munich malt!

Gambrinus: We were the first mail order homebrew supplier to feature Gambrinus Malts. Gambrinus is a small maltster in Canada that produces what we feel is the finest 2-Row malt in the world. Also makes a unique Honey Malt and some dark Munich malts.

Vienna, Munich & Colored Malts

All of the malts in this section must be mashed. All of the Vienna/Munich malts (except the Gambrinus Dark Munich) have enough diastatic power to convert themselves, but some pale malt is recommended if other non-enzymatic adjuncts are used.

Gambrinus "Light" Munich Malt: Actually not very light at 15 degrees but an interesting munich, quite toasty. Color: 15 degrees L. By the pound: MLGAML $1.75/lb.

Dextrin (Carapils) Malts

Dextrin malts are used to add body to the beer with minimal color. The Briess must be mashed while the DeWolf-Cosyns can be steeped or mashed.

Briess Carapils: This is the original dextrin malt. Small hard kernels normally require mill readjustments on some models. Color: 2-3 degrees L. By the pound: MLBRCA $1.75/lb

DeWolf-Cosyns Carapils: Actually a light crystal malt with high dextrin content. Plump soft kernels, but will add slightly more color than the Briess. Color: 4-8 degrees L. By the pound: MLDWCA $1.75/lb

Crystal (Caramel) Malts

Crystal malts have already had all their starches converted to sugars as part of the malting process. They can be mashed or steeped to add color, sweetness and body to an extract brew. Crystal malts are rated by a range of color.

Hugh Baird Crystal Malts: There are six Hugh Baird crystal malts ranging in color from 13o to 165 degrees L. We stock all six. All are priced at $1.35/lb.

Flaked Barley: Unmalted, high beta-glucan barley that has been flaked. Color unknown but light. Great for increasing head retention (use about 1/4 pound in 5 gallons). By the pound: MLFB $1.55/lb
